Wits: Peter Sagal, Paul F. Tompkins

Wits has grown into the Twin Cities' best confluence of comedy and music over the years for one important reason: The musicians who get booked are frequently as funny as the comedians. That holds especially true for Open Mike Eagle, who helped bring the house down with Hannibal Buress at Wits last year and on his fittingly titled upcoming album, Dark Comedy, this year. Eagle is the kind of hip-hop artist who's just as comfortable opening comedy shows as he is throwing down in a cipher, and one of the comedians he's opened for is standup/podcast super-talent Paul F. Tompkins, whose quick-witted improvisational rapport and ability to get hilariously lost in his bizarro-world celebrity impersonations of figures like Ice-T or Garry Marshall are unmissable. Rounding out the trio of guests this week is comedy writer/15-plus-year host of public radio news-quiz comedy show Wait Wait Don't Tell Me Peter Sagal, and his background as a do-everything kind of figure — essayist, on-air personality, actor, humorist — will fit in well with the classic Wits blend of sketches, interviews, and general goofoffery.
