Wits: Dave Foley

It's difficult to define Wits, because Wits is constantly evolving. The comedy variety show, recorded at the Fitzgerald Theater and broadcast on public radio, brings together humorists from varied professional backgrounds and musicians with something to sing and something to say. Host and master of ceremonies John Moe has developed a Wits podcast; he's also a force on Twitter, and encourages live tweeting before and even during the show tapings. Wits kicks off its fall season this weekend with guest Dave Foley, a founding member of the hugely influential sketch group Kids in the Hall. Foley also played the beleaguered straight man Dave in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio, provided voices for Pixar, and appeared in the cult-classic films Brain Candy and Dick. Foley has experienced a career renaissance of late, veering from KITH-style absurdism into more personal material as a standup comic and podcast guest. He'll be joined by former Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty who, like so many Wits musical guests, is multi-talented: Doughty is also a photographer, poet, and author whose memoir, The Book of Drugs, published earlier this year, chronicles the addiction that led to the demise of his band. Moe, Foley, and Doughty will be joined by musical guide John Munson and backing band the Witnesses.
