Where Tammy Tied the Knot: A Night of Tammy Faye Bakker
While her heavy makeup, petite frame, and brightly colored outfits were eye-catching, it wasn't just the look of Tammy Faye that was striking; her life was high drama as well. From her tumultuous marriage to and eventual divorce from televangelist Jim Bakker, whose star fell sharply after sex and fraud scandals, to her later appearances at gay pride parades and on The Surreal Life, Tammy Faye was a larger-than-life icon who practiced what she preached: tolerance, forgiveness, and love. On April 1, 1961, her story began at Loring Theater when she wed Jim Bakker (the space was owned by the Evangelical Association at the time). To celebrate the 50-year anniversary, the party kicks off with a screening of the spellbinding documentary The Eyes of Tammy Faye at 7:30 p.m. Following the film, a panel will discuss icons and female role models in the gay community. At the stroke of 9:30 p.m. the party gets hopping, as guests are invited to dance it up to '60s tunes while dressed in their fanciest wedding gear. Commemorate the evening with a vintage-style wedding photo, and enjoy a complimentary boutonniere and toast (there will also be a cash bar, of course).
