What Happened to the Dollar?

Commenting on the frustrations of contemporary existence has always been a function of the theater, yet original works dealing directly with economic issues tend to be in conspicuously short supply. Considering the widespread severity of monetary malaise, one might wonder if even the satirists have been reduced to selling off their senses of humor. Fear not, as the comic provocateurs at Box Wine Theater have developed a stimulus package of urgent laughs courtesy of playwright Sam Graber's What Happened to the Dollar? Given a world-premiere staging at the Bryant-Lake Bowl, this production involves a group of online gamers bringing chaos to the Federal Reserve through the manufacturing of a "virtual currency" popular enough to destabilize the value of traditional U.S. greenbacks. Those thinking the premise farfetched might want to consider the curious case of Bitcoin, a digital currency now being traded as an online commodity, detached from government sanction or regulatory oversight. Known to wildly fluctuate in value purely on speculative reflexes, Bitcoin is an emerging economic wild card, one with the potential to radically alter our understanding of dollars and cents. At least, that's the theory proposed by this engaging exploration of financial fallacies. Subject matter aside, please keep in mind that the box office will accept payment in government-issued currency only.
Sundays, 7 p.m.; Thursdays, 7 p.m. Starts: May 12. Continues through May 26, 2013
