We Exist

Modern art forms are often about controversy, and graffiti art is no exception. Graffiti haters argue that it merely amounts to vandalism, is a lowbrow art form, and absolutely does not belong in a museum. Fans love it for its subversive nature in that it challenges perceptions of public space and art. Its impact can be seen in fashion, gig posters, music videos, and other aspects of pop culture. For "We Exist," over 30 local, regional, and national artists examine how graffiti has influenced culture, people, and art, as well as how it informs more traditional art mediums. The show has taken over Intermedia Arts' walls and floor, as pieces cram every inch of space, sometimes even lending playful commentary to other nearby artworks. For the past month and a half, the gallery has hosted film screenings, workshops, and book events relating to the art of graffiti. This week will be your last chance to see the show, and there will be a closing party from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, August 30.
