Walker Art Center's 2nd Annual Internet Cat Video Fest

Minnesota State Fairgrounds GrandstandEntertainment options at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand have a history of eclecticism, offering everything from stadium rock to amateur talent shows. For all its diversity, however, few previous Grandstand events have stood out quite like the Internet Cat Video Fest. Curated by the Walker Art Center, the festival is an expansion of the wildly popular gathering inaugurated in 2012. While the event was designed as an experiment in the formation of online communities, such intentions proved largely incidental to the more than 10,000 attendees who filled out the Walker lawn for an evening of videos featuring the adorable antics of everyday cats. Relocating to the Fairgrounds, the gathering is sure to benefit from the more carnivalesque atmosphere. Attendees are encouraged to wear cat costumes, interact with onsite projects (including paintings by Rudy Fig, letterpress printing by Lunalux, and a video project by Maria Mortati), learn more about cat welfare from the Animal Humane Society and Caring for Cats, and — true to State Fair tradition — marvel at a detailed cat butter sculpture. Despite such attractions, the focus of the event remains the videos, with prizes to be awarded to filmmakers in a variety of categories, including a "Cat-on-a-Stick" for the best Minnesota cat and the coveted "Golden Kitty" reflecting the overall people's choice. With a multi-city roadshow planned, there's no better time to celebrate the feline phenomenon.
