Vilification Prom Night
Now that schools throughout the metro are impatiently surrendering to summer, sightings of nattily attired youngsters traversing the Twin Cities in rented limousines have become a fairly common occurrence, signaling the crowning event of the high school social calendar: prom. In idealized imaginings, prom is nothing short of an enchanted rite of passage during which young adults celebrate their long-awaited release from the restrictions of childhood, even while commemorating the everlasting friendships forged along the way. Many corsage-wearing would-be revelers, of course, have found that their actual prom experience doesn't quite live up to such lofty expectations, consisting instead of flagrantly mismatched couples desperately enduring an endless evening of ill-fitting clothes, awkward conversations, and graceless dancing. (Not to mention the adverse fates that await those daring to test the limits of such libations as Boone's Farm.) Almost paradise, indeed. Rather than denying the dreary side of prom, however, the irreverent wiseacres at Vilification Tennis have composed their own mocking ode to this teenage institution. Dubbed Vilification Prom Night, the event reads as a caustically ribald tribute to the myriad prom dejections that never make the yearbook. With live accompaniment by Courtney McClean and the Dirty Curls, Vilification Tennis offers catharsis by ridicule, firing off improvisational riffs on the heartaches of one magically miserable evening.
