Vieux Farka Touré

Mon Pays (My Country, en français) is guitarist Vieux Farka Touré's moving tribute to his native Mali, which has been torn by regional fighting involving Al Qaeda and Tuareg rebels since January 2012. Vieux is the son of the late, iconic guitarist Ali Farka Touré, whose so-called desert blues connected Mali to the Mississippi Delta. Vieux's work certainly reflects Ali's, but he has also established his own sound by integrating diverse genres, sometimes earning comparisons to no less than Hendrix. Pays is primarily acoustic, however, featuring sinuous, haunting, elegiac melodies that, he has said, reflect the Malian heritage of "peace and beauty, rich culture and tolerance." Opening for Touré's quartet will be Morley, a New York native whose socially conscious lyrics are matched to an intriguing blend of global pop, folk, soul, and jazz.
