Valerie June

Valerie June's mercurial sound defies time and style but remains densely rich in character. June grew up in small-town Tennessee and honed her music in Memphis. She made her first splash across the Atlantic and is elastic with her expressive, reedy voice, alternately suggesting Dolly Parton, Billie Holiday, and Ann Peebles, just for starters. Her extraordinary Concord debut, Pushin' Against a Stone, effortlessly rambles among blues, gospel, country, soul, Appalachian folk,'60s girl group pop, and hints of the British invasion. Her originals range from a murder ballad to celebrations and lamentations, alternately haunting, poignant, giddy and sensual, coalescing in what she calls "organic moonshine roots music." Minneapolis folk duo the Sudden Lovelys will open.
