Vadim Gershman: Alternative Cloud Research
When virtual worlds first began popping up in games, rides, and online, many people were fascinated. Nowadays, we're still enthralled, but we're much more nonchalant about it, as even those who aren't tech-savvy or internet-obsessed may find themselves spending more time than they'd like exploring the worlds of Grand Theft Auto, Farmland, or the Sims. But what is it that we get out of this time spent wandering through simulated reality? This is something artist Vadim Gershman explores in "Alternative Cloud Research." The project began when the artist found himself looking at a blue sky filled with clouds after traveling through a dark tunnel while playing around with Google Earth. He then took time each day to explore Google Street View for compelling skyscapes, making the task a meditative experience in virtual travel. The resulting project is that of an automated archive that searches and displays images of clouds. What will you discover through your next virtual adventure? The opening reception is from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 31.
