U.S. Pond Hockey Championships
On its official website, the seventh annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championships boasts that it celebrates the sport "the way nature intended." Meaning, the game is played by amateur athletes in the great outdoors—regardless of the wind chill—in front of fans, with plenty of beer and brats for all. Over the next three days, dozens of teams will take to the ice to compete for pond dominance. Divisions include youth, over 40, over 50, women, rink rat (for those who are new to the game), and boot hockey, a co-ed series where folks play without skates. Winners will take home nary a prize, save for a sense of pride, bragging rights, and their names engraved on the Golden Shovel trophy. Open skating, beer-garden revelry, and food from Joe Senser's will also be found onsite. For more info, visit www.uspondhockey.com.
