U Theatre: Dance Revolutions
Graduates of the University of Minnesota Dance Program find themselves eagerly recruited by area companies from Zenon to Black Label Movement. Here's a chance to see the latest crop of dynamite movers tackle choreography by nationally and internationally known artists, including two world premieres. Laurie Carlos, an OBIE award-winning actor and Bessie Award-winning choreographer who has worked with the legendary Urban Bush Women, uses jazz improvisation to explore how we pass myths from generation to generation. New York choreographer Colleen Thomas, known locally for her vibrant work with the Zenon Dance Company, will also present a dance hot off the presses. The program includes a restaging of Carl Flink's poignant "A Fractured Narrative for a Sad Ending," based on his tumultuous relationship with his late sister. And there's a welcome reprise of Louis Falco's "Escargot," a disco-infused jolt of manic intensity from the 1970s bad boy of dance who choreographed the movie Fame.
