Twin Cities Zinefest
Zine-making has a long history, perhaps as long as the printing press. Loosely defined, zines are self-published works, often of a personal nature. They range in topics from the influential pamphlets of Thomas Paine, to Star Trek fan fiction, to political diatribes, to recipe-sharing, running the gamut of discourse, covering matters serious and lighthearted alike. Folks will celebrate these works at the eighth annual Twin Cities Zinefest. While not a household word, zines have played an influential role in the local arts scene, and since 2004 local creative types have gathered yearly to exhibit their work and introduce people to the community. The afternoon promises informational discussions about self-production, as well as vegan treats, reading rooms, and even a chance to produce your own how-to guide. Exhibitions include displays by the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis Community and Technical College Library, the Fly Away Zine Mobile, and Zine Apothecary. The event will serve as both a networking center for active zinesters, as well as an introduction for curious newbies. A large part of the appeal of the culture is its accessibility and diversity, and it's likely that there will be a little something for every taste. For more info, visit zinefest.org.
