Tom Rhodes performs all over the world. His calendar for the next six months includes gigs in Hanoi, Shanghai, Amsterdam, and Edinburgh. He gets around. So it's no surprise that Minneapolis comedians take great pride in the legend that he once called Death Comedy Jam, the weekly open mic at Grumpy's Downtown, "the worst comedy room in the world." He likely meant it, but in the way that he means all of his jokes: with pure immediacy and no ill will. Rhodes is a comedian who believes everything that he says, until it's time to say the next thing. For example, although he's a Florida native, Rhodes is perfectly comfortable calling himself a "real California weirdo." But contradictions like this don't bother Rhodes; they fuel his litany of observations, exclamations, and occasional laments. If you visit his website, www.tomrhodes.net, be sure to click on the link titled "Happiness." Here, you'll find a list of things that make him happy. It's a long list, and probably tells you everything you need to know about him. There are a couple more nods to the Minnesota comedy scene as well. Stand Up! Records and Dan Schlissel make the list, as well as "meeting Hedberg's parents." Reading it will make you happy to live in a world with Tom Rhodes. 18+.
