Tobias Wolff, Patricia Hampl, Charles Baxter, Martha Stortz
An impressive foursome assembles to celebrate the release of Not Less Than Everything: Catholic Writers on Heroes of Conscience, from Joan of Arc to Oscar Romero (HarperOne), a collection of new essays edited by Catherine Wolff. Tobias Wolff, the evening's out-of-towner, will read his self-questioning appreciation of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who was beheaded for refusing Nazi conscription. Patricia Hampl weighs in with fitting first-person touches on Montaigne, the nomenclator and paragon of her essay. And scholar Martha E. Stortz uses Martin Luther to consider the body, stigmata, and the ongoing hunger for reformation. Charles Baxter, who's wrestled with faith and Catholicism in books such as Believers, will serve as moderator.
