Tig Notaro

Tig Notaro's new CD, Good One, is the first—and thus far only—comedy album to be released by Secretly Canadian, the label behind bands including Yeasayer, Here We Go Magic, and the War on Drugs. It's an unconventional arrangement but also a perfect fit for Notaro, whose singular voice and low-key delivery suggest an indie-rock sensibility. Notaro punctuates her clever, quietly caustic material not with shouts and curses and broad gestures but rather with deftly employed silences that can heighten the tension or even become jokes unto themselves. It's a unique approach she's brought to network talk-show appearances, Comedy Central standup spots, and sitcoms, notably with her friend and collaborator Sarah Silverman on The Sarah Silverman Program and on her own self-titled pilot for Logo TV. Joining Notaro on the bill are two premier Twin Cities standups. Kjell Bjorgan, who toured with Lewis Black and appeared on Comedy Central's taste-making showcase Live at Gotham, is an improvisational whiz who layers his wry, self-deprecating jokes with nimble audience interaction. Amber Preston, similarly sharp off the cuff, brings theatrical energy to idiosyncratic, smartly crafted material that's earned her spots at the Aspen Comedy Festival and the San Francisco Sketch Fest, as well as the distinction of being named one of the top-five comics to watch by Marc Maron.
