Third Thursday: Bejeweled

Snicker all you want at the word "bling," but eye-catching charms are a phenomena that transcends time. Throughout history, jewelry has been used to signify class, status, age, and even gender. At tonight's special event, guests can check out a wide variety of pieces from the permanent collection on display for "Unspoken Messages: The Art of the Necklace." Jewelry includes an item from Hawaii made from human hair, plant fiber, and walrus tusks; an Indian necklace made from berries, gold, and rubies; and even a necklace from Tiffany's. In the Pillsbury Auditorium you can enjoy a screening of She Done Him Wrong (1933), a movie filled with rampant crime, diamonds, and double entendres, starring Mae West and Cary Grant. Indie-rock group Coach Said Not To will play a set, while local jewelry designers Sheila Moar (Fashion Fusion) and Helen Wang will be selling their work.
