Third Thursday: Art Perchance
The Minnesota State Fair may be another week away, but the MIA is already preparing for the Midway and carnival games, if not the calories. Art Perchance, the Third Thursday event for August, is one of two large-scale yearly fundraisers put on by the Friends of the Institute, one of the nation's most active museum volunteer organizations. Open to the public, the celebration will feature 10 carnival games inspired by the museum's best-loved artworks (Hoopla Doryphoros and Van Gogh's Olive Pool, to name two). The event will also include live music provided by Lee's Liquor Lounge favorites Trailer Trash. Visitors who choose to donate to the MIA through this event will receive extra tokens for the art drawing, valet parking, and an exclusive cocktail reception and tour with the museum's director, Kaywin Feldman, preceding the main party. The games are free to play, but a $10 wristband gives you a chance to win donated artwork. "The toughest decision someone will have to make is where to place their bets," says event chair Kathy Murphy. Prizes include nearly 100 pieces of art and jewelry created by local artists.
