The Voronezh State Ballet Theatre of Russia: Swan Lake
This 19th-century masterpiece unfolds as both visceral drama and classic dance architecture. Despite the nasty-versus-nice swan dichotomy that dominates the film Black Swan, the real star of this iconic ballet is the corps de ballet. A bevy of enchanted maidens trapped in swan bodies, they amplify and extend the swan queen Odette's tragic dilemma when the Prince mistakenly plights his troth to the wicked black swan. Sweeping the stage in a kaleidoscope of immaculate formations, these women encapsulate the restless anguish of doomed creatures that is the tragic essence of Swan Lake. To see this quintessentially Russian ballet performed by a Russian company is a rare and sublime experience.
