The Vagabond King
Skylark Opera opens its fourth annual Summer Festival this week with The Vagabond King, a swashbuckling story full of intrigue, romance, sword fights, and villains. The 1925 operetta was composed by Rudolf Frimli, with book and lyrics by Brian Hooker and William H. Post. The piece is based on If I Were King, a play about a 15th-century poet and thief who woos the king's lovely cousin and defends France against invaders. Among the cast are husband-and-wife team Jeffrey Madison and Vicki Fingalson, Amanda Jenkins, and Jake Endres, along with direction by Kristin Kenning and choreography by Broadway veteran Linda Talcott Lee. The Vagabond King will be performed in repertory with Leonard Bernstein's On the Town, a work about three young sailors seeking adventure in New York City. It features direction by Robert Neu and choreography by Twin Cities dance scene darling Penelope Freeh.
