The Sports Show

Make no mistake: The media has had a huge impact on how we view the sports industry. Long ago, when radio commentators and journalists began telling suspenseful tales of what they saw on the field, it became clear that sports was rife with stories. Nowadays, coverage of major sporting events is loaded with spectacle, including constant graphics, flashing stats, camera angles that give fans an athlete's view of the game, and panels offering gossipy speculation on behind-the-scenes tensions. The media not only reports on and captures games, sometimes it even help create celebrities, elevating charismatic talents like Joe DiMaggio, Muhammad Ali, Mary Lou Retton, and Michael Jordan to iconic status. "The Sports Show" examines the impact that the media and its technologies have had on the billion-dollar sports industry. The exhibit will include photography, video, installations, and newspaper clippings from journalists, photographers, and artists. The show opens on Thursday, along with "The Sports Show: Minnesota," with a museum-wide Third Thursday party from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will feature live music from indietronic group Pretty Good Dance Moves, appearances from the Minnesota Rollergirls, and refreshments. On Sunday, there will also be a celebration featuring team mascots, a photo booth, and sports-friendly activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Image © The Gordon Parks Foundation)
