The Sexual Life of Savages
When it came down to casting The Sexual Lives of Savages, the latest production from Walking Shadow, director Amy Rummenie found a wealth of young talent to take on the roles. "There is a lot of hot competition for the younger roles. We only have one actor that we've worked with before. Everyone else is new to us, and it is very exciting," she says. Ian MacAllister-McDonald's new work digs into the intimate details of a relationship and how more knowledge sometimes isn't the best way to go. In it, Hal (Joe Bombard) discovers that girlfriend Jean (Meghan Kreidler, who just starred in Mu Performing Arts' Kung Fu Zombies vs. Cannibals) has more sexual experience than he thought. This drags him into a deeper world via his swinger friend Clark and others, including possible new girlfriend Alice. The company also includes Clare Parme, Megan Dowd, and Nicholas Leeman. Working with new actors means Rummenie has to discover how each of them prefers to work, and merge that with her own approach to the show. That's helped because "in this show, each of them has a particular solo scene. So I have individual time with each of them," she says. "It's been very helpful. The playwright did me a favor there." The show's content — with issues of sexual partners, habits, and quirks on the table — means there has been frank discussion among the cast and crew on "how to work out the material and how each character handles it," says Rummenie.
