The Santaland Diaries

If you like a dash (or two or three) of irony with your holiday entertainment, the clear choice for you is The Santaland Diaries. The play is a one-man show based on David Sedaris's humorous essay about working as a Christmas elf at Macy's department store. This is the third straight year it has been presented by Frank Theatre; Hennepin Stages and the Woman's Club have hosted previous productions. It's the eighth time director Wendy Knox has directed the piece, having also done it in Syracuse and Portland. "Minneapolis has a huge Sedaris following — as does Portland — so there seems to be a crowd that wants to see the show," she says. Joe Leary has played the role in all three Minneapolis presentations, and Knox says that he has "a great naughtiness about him as an elf." This year's run at the Southern Theater marks the first time in 12 years that Frank has performed there, though the venue hosted 13 of its shows in the company's early years. "Who'd a thunk it?" jokes Knox. "The story is subversive enough to fit comfortably within Frank's mission to allow us to have a holiday show."
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.; Mondays, 8 p.m. Starts: Dec. 6. Continues through Dec. 23, 2012
