The Punchline Punchout
Breaking into standup comedy can be crazy-competitive; staying there can be even tougher. This week, that competition heats up even more when 10 of the best young comedians in the game do battle onstage at Acme. Punchline Punchout is an idea that originated locally at the Comedy Corner Underground roughly two years ago, and will grace the Acme stage for the very first time this week. The premise is simple: Two teams of five comedians perform new material each night, with two players on each team writing five to seven minutes of material around a single topic. The winner of each round is chosen by an expert panel of judges, and the team with the most points at the end of the evening reigns supreme. For the inaugural comedy battle royal at Acme, comedians Chad Daniels, Andy Erikson, David Huntsberger, Isaac Witty, and Pat Susmilch will take on Cy Amundson, Amber Preston, Shane Mauss, Mike Cronin, and Brooks Robinson in a war for comedic supremacy. Erikson, one of the co-creators of Punchout, says that this isn't just a great opportunity for comedy fans to see something unique, but also a chance for comics to work together and improve their craft. "Every comic who has ever done Punchout loved it," she says. "Even if they end up bombing, the crowd is really supportive because they know they're seeing something totally new that no one else has ever seen before." 18+.
