The Primrose Path

British playwright Crispin Whittell brings his second premiere adaptation to the Guthrie Theater with The Primrose Path, based on Ivan Turgenev's 1859 novel Home of the Gentry. Whittell's first adaptation, the latest version of A Christmas Carol used by the theater, has played to strong audiences and solid notices over the past three seasons. Whittell was looking to create a passionate love story, and he found it in the second novel by the Russian author. Here, the tale centers on Lavretsky (Broadway and off-Broadway actor Kyle Fabel), who returns to Russia after years spent in Paris. He is looking for a new start, but finds romance in the form of Liza (Suzy Kohane). The cast includes a number of other well-known local actors, including Sally Wingert, Candace Barrett Birk, and Nathaniel Fuller. Director Roger Rees may be best known for his work in front of the camera and onstage — he was on Cheers and The West Wing, along with a Tony Award-winning turn in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby — but he also won a Tony in 2012 for directing the hit Peter and the Starcatcher. The show is in previews through Thursday, and opens Friday, May 3.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: April 27. Continues through June 15, 2013
