New York City quintet the National have found unlikely stardom with their brand of brainy noir-rock. While 2010's High Violet sounded arguably too stately for its own good, this year's follow-up, Trouble Will Find Me, thankfully finds the band at their most outwardly rocking since their 2005 breakthrough, Alligator. While frontman Matt Berninger can certainly get by sticking to the middle range of his honeyed baritone, the band's latest songs find him willing to strain into his upper register with regularity, adding a welcome tension to driving mid-tempo masterpieces like "Sea of Love."
