Following their ubiquity on "modern rock" radio circa 2004's Hot Fuss, the Killers struck gold again with 2006's Sam's Town, which featured "When You Were Young" among other power-chorded wallops. Not coincidentally, the Las Vegas-rooted four-piece reached their commercial peak around the same time the Guitar Hero franchise was at its most popular. Frontman Brandon Flowers, a swaggering descendant of Freddie Mercury, matches Dave Keuning's six-string skills with empowering vocal grace. Last year's Battle Born swiftly divided the critical community, but whether it's Coldplay or Mumford & Sons, it's always admirable when a group tries to sound like the biggest thing ever in this increasingly band-unfriendly world.
