The Hold Steady
Although the Hold Steady are usually identified as a Brooklyn band, this still qualifies as a homecoming. Not only are singer Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler former members of the local band Lifter Puller, the Edina-raised Finn saturates his lyrics with local references while echoes of Minnesota stalwarts like the 'Mats and Hüsker Dü seep into the music. Actually, Finn returns to that specificity on the Steady's new Teeth Dreams after straying into fuzzier terrain on 2010's Heaven Is Whenever. This time Finn's tales depict characters slowly coming to the realization that growing up doesn't really dissipate nagging anxiety or prevent "waking up with that American sadness." The band rocks harder than ever behind Finn's Jim Carroll-like jumble of words, finding fresh inspiration in the bristling new guitar tandem of Kubler and ex-Lucero Steve Selvidge.
