The Greenway Challenge
Originally scheduled for early June, the Greenway Challenge is back on, and is an excellent event to demonstrate why Minneapolis was named the most bike-friendly city in the country by Bicycling Magazine. It's a 44-mile tour along the most beautiful trails in the city, serving as a fundraiser for the Greenway Coalition (the organization responsible for making the city-spanning bikeway). Rather than awarding prizes on quick completion of the course, an array of notices will be based on charity pledges collected by bikers—from a trip to France for the highest pledge-earner to a nice dinner out for third place. There are even categories for best costume and best-decorated bike. At the risk of sounding sentimental, the best prize is riding outdoors astride the best form of locomotion known to man, with fellow locals who share your zeal for human-powered movement. So round up some friends and some pledgers (minimum $250) and hop on. Not into riding? Acoustic musicians are invited to serenade participants along the way throughout the path.
