The Great Urban Race
Dress as your favorite superhero, grab running shoes and a partner, and get ready to sprint through downtown Minneapolis, answering trivia questions and competing in games of... er ...skill? The Great Urban Race, a wacky adventure/scavenger hunt, lands in Minneapolis this Saturday, and is a qualifying event for the national championship in Las Vegas on November 6. The event starts at Preston's Urban Pub; contestants must work their way to wherever the 12 clues supplied by race coordinators direct them to go, and do whatever the clues tell them to do. In New Orleans last year, contestants were asked to transport live alligators with their bare hands. Reptilian mouths were bound, but still—live alligators! That could be you. Bring a camera, because you'll need proof you completed some events, and keep in mind that while "race" is a relative term, you will be traipsing over up to six miles of concrete under your own foot power—no bikes, cars, or taxis, although you're allowed to cheat and jump on public transportation if it's going your way. You don't have to dress up, but prizes are awarded for the best-in-show costumes (the "Wonder Women" team won last year). First- through third-place teams get some cash, as well as free admission to the national championship, and part of the race proceeds go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Register at www.greaturbanrace.com or 952.893.0442 to volunteer.
