The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger
The tiger isn't the only ghost with a prominent role in Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl's band GOASTT. The sweeping, meticulously crafted baroque psychedelia on GOASTT's new (and first proper) album, Midnight Sun, is deeply influenced by John Lennon's Beatles experiments, from the heavy rocker "Too Deep" to the jewel-like "Johannesburg," featuring Muhl's evocative lead vocals. It's a kaleidoscopic garden of delights where John's legacy thrives in innumerable ways via melting vocals, serpentine guitars, buoyant harmonies, and Eastern modalities. At the same time Sean, while clearly embracing his roots, asserts his own artistic vision. He and Muhl, working with admirable assurance, invent a surreal soundscape of thrilling pop hooks, shifting layers of electronics, and diverse rhythms, and a swirling, very contemporary sonic palette. Opening will be Canterbury quartet Syd Arthur, who also inventively explore contemporary psychedelia on their latest, Sound Mirror. 18+.
