Talk of the Stacks: Dessa
With last summer's release of her new album, Parts of Speech, Dessa has set our Twin Cities abuzz again. Soon fans will have another reason to get excited about the local artist, as she will be releasing a second poetry chapbook through Rain Taxi this October. At her Talk of the Stacks event, the poet and hip-hop artist will join Rain Taxi founder and editor Eric Lorberer to discuss her impressive range of creative work, and how her multifaceted approach to artistic expression affects her poetry. "When you have people who are creative in more than one discipline, there's simultaneously a similarity in voice and tone. But at the same time there are key differences," Lorberer explains. "Her interest as a lyricist, and the tightness that form requires, have really informed these free-verse poems." For Lorberer, one of the most striking aspects of this chapbook was the influence Dessa's college philosophy degree has on her writing. "Poetry is a form that is really highly suited to logic, argument, and abstraction," he says. Readers can expect a confident and focused Dessa in this newest work, as she delves into both everyday and surreal moments with her inquisitive voice. (Photo by Zoe Prinds)
