Swearin's lack of self-seriousness makes them seem like a group who'd only play for a dozen friends. The scrappy, vaguely bookish indie-rockers out of Philly take cues from '90s fuzz maestros like Pavement and the Breeders, but their songs seem to come so effortlessly that those acts might not be influences at all. Primary vocalists Allison Crutchfield (sister of Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield) and Kyle Gilbride are distinct in tone if limited in range, a combination that nonetheless lends personality to their grungy throwdowns and acoustic whispers alike. Their two albums to date, 2012's self-titled and last year's Surfing Strange, are low-risk, sneakily hooky bursts without a weak song between them. With Bitter Canon and Griswold. 18+.
