Sugar Sammy

American funnyman Bert Kreischer famously turned his college partying into a successful standup career. His Canadian counterpart may well be Sugar Sammy. "When I was in university," the McGill alum explains, "I used to throw parties to pay my tuition." Sammy made sure pretty girls were on the guest list, that they got in, and that they drank for free. "My parties were a big hit. If you have hot girls coming in, the guys will follow." The ladies, in fact, bestowed him with what would ultimately become his stage name. "I would always take care of them. Everyone knew me as Sam but the girls started calling me 'Sugar' Sammy and I kept it." It helped him gain his initial following when he went into comedy. "Everyone knew who I was," he laughs. Onstage these days he relates stories about friends and family. "It's very true-to-life," he says. "They always say, 'Write what you know.' All of it is very autobiographical, but not to a t. Obviously you have to exaggerate a little bit. But everything I write comes from something I've lived through." 18+; 21+ later shows.
