Striking 12

For a season defined by expected merriment, there's nothing like the holidays to distress the lonely. Determined to avoid the incessant cheer of New Year's Eve revelers, the melancholic lead character of Striking 12 resolves to give the holiday a pass, opting for a quiet evening at home, far from Times Square. Fortunately for audiences, such downbeat plans are dashed by a knock on the door from an unexpected guest. Both paralleling and directly referencing Hans Christian Andersen's short story "The Little Match Girl," Striking 12 caps the holiday season with a welcome burst of energy. For the show, a reprisal of last year's premiere, Christine Weber returns to the director's chair to weave a minimalist storyline around an engagingly varied showcase of live music, exhibiting a wildly diverse sampling of styles including rock, jazz, and classical. Written by playwright Rachel Sheinkin, best known for authoring The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the production elevates the mood through memorably quirky dialogue and fourth-wall breaking asides. Featuring standout performers from BCT's recent production of Les Miserables (including Molly Jo Hall, Dominique Wooten, and Aly Westberg), Striking 12 is an irresistible call for celebration.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Dec. 13. Continues through Dec. 31, 2013
