"Take Me As I Am," a rollicking, folk-pop epic, kicks off Stornoway's Tales from Terra Firma with an effusive, unabashedly joyful celebration of love and marriage, riding waves of churning acoustic guitars, billowing piano chords, bristling horns, and Brian Briggs's soaring vocals. It's an auspicious, infectious start for the quartet of Oxford University grads' second album. English folk roots mix with occasional chamber-pop and a generous dose of contemporary alt smarts. Even in moodier songs like "Farewell Appalachia" and through a persistent theme of time passages, Stornoway exude buoyancy laced with equal measures whimsy and reality. Briggs's lyrics are a curious combination of intentional clichés, fine details, and left-field insight. 18+.
