Stevie Ray's Improv in the Park

The Twin Cities' bustling arts and theater scene inevitably hits a mid-year lull as audiences shun basement clubs and opera houses alike to soak up some of the too-scarce summer heat. That seasonal swing prompted improv impresario Stevie Ray to take a more direct approach: "When it's summertime, go where the people are. They're not going to come inside, so we'll go outside." The result is Stevie Ray's Improv in the Park, an outdoor comedy show now entering its 19th year of production. The short-form improv performances take place every Sunday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. through August 29 and are family-friendly, heavy on audience interaction, and, best of all, free. This year the show moves from the Lake Harriet Rose Garden to Minnehaha Park, which offers a bandshell stage, ample seating, and proximity to the fantastic Sea Salt Eatery. "It's our chance to take our professional troupe members and mix in our school of improv students," says Ray. "Several of our performers got their start in the park."
