"Don't look back..." takes on contemporary resonance when, in this reworking of the myth of Orpheus, the main character is embodied — or, rather, disembodied — by an electric guitar. Presented by the Guthrie Theater and Liquid Music, this wordless opera — composed by Steven Mackey with Jason Treuting, conceived and directed by Mark DeChiazza — seamlessly blends music, cinematic imagery, and movement performed by dancers from the Susan Marshall Company in an exciting reimaging of the story of love and loss, hubris and regret. At once grounded in the bodies of the dancers and the string quartet Ars Moriendi, performed by musicians of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the work is also ephemeral and dreamlike. Here's storytelling for a new generation, embedded in the archetypal.
