Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell
Not merely a wild and crazy guy, Steve Martin is a seriously talented banjo player and composer. Martin won a bluegrass Grammy for his first banjo album, 2009's The Crow, which also sported fellow banjo aces Earl Scruggs, Tony Trischka, and Pete Wernick. Then he teamed up with bluegrass's Steep Canyon Rangers for the also excellent Rare Bird Alert, which combined serious picking with Martin originals both heartfelt ("You") and silly ("Atheists Don't Have No Songs"). Martin's latest is a full-fledged collaboration with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. Martin wrote the slinky folk/bluegrass music while Brickell contributed the whimsical lyrics for Love Has Come for You, which was produced by Peter Asher and features such notable guests as Esperanza Spalding, Sara Watkins, and the Rangers, who'll also be on hand at the zoo. Brickell's sly insouciance perfectly matches Martin's sprightly banjo, her slurred phrasing and Texas twang spicing up her inherent sweetness, especially as her lyrics sneak into such shadowy territory as breakups and death. This is billed as an evening of music and comedy, both of which should be seriously entertaining.
