Steve Earle & the Dukes (& Duchesses)
From renegade roots rocker to collaborator with some of bluegrass's finest, from hard country and blues purveyor to folkie busker (in spirit, while also playing one on TV's Tremé), Steve Earle has put together an eclectic and eloquent body of work over the decades. He's a terrific songwriter and fervent performer, whether snarling or waxing philosophical. His progressive activism has often surfaced in provocative songs that don't shy away from uncomfortable truths, even while world-weariness has seeped into his work. On last year's The Low Highway, that surfaced on the reflective "Burnin' It Down." But there were also country-rockers ("Calico Country") bluegrass ("Warren Hellman's Banjo"), and a couple of tunes written with fellow Tremé cast member Lucia Micarelli.
