Smiles and Rage: A Retrospective
This weekend an exhibit celebrating the life and work of local artist, poet, and musician Daniel Kaniess, who passed away this past spring from cancer, will be at Third Floor Gallery 332. "Smiles and Rage" aims to share Kaniess's work with people, as well as "all his talent and all his creative ideas," says his widow, Sharon Kaniess, who will host the event. Kaniess was a prolific artist who was creating up to the last days of his life. He was a recipient of numerous awards for his paintings, including two McKnight Fellowships, a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, and a Bush Fellowship. His work has been shown as part of the MIA's Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program (MAEP) and at the Walker Art Center. The show this weekend will be a chance to experience Kaniess's legacy. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, November 17.
