Honoring the sovereignty of Native Americans is a long and arduous process that occurs in fits and starts. But there’s no shortage of reminders nationally or regionally of the myriad ways in which First Peoples advocate for their agency through artistic creativity and innovation. Case in point: Skin(s). The multi-platform project includes a dance work by Rosy Simas; an exhibition curated by Heid E. Erdrich with works by Carolyn Lee Anderson, Julie Buffalohead, Andrea Carlson, Wakemup, Dyani White Hawk, and others; a film by Erdrich and Elizabeth Day that celebrates urban Native identity; and a web media project that launched October 1. Perspectives from Dakota, Ojibwe, Ponca, Lakota, Navajo, and other indigenous nations are represented here.
