Although Minneapolis may be covered in snow for much of the year, it's actually a pretty solid skateboarding destination. Our extensive system of public parks includes the eighth-highest number of skate parks per resident in the entire country, according to the Trust for Public Land. In the tradition of "ARTCRANK," another alternative transportation-focused art show founded in the Twin Cities, "Skate Related" celebrates those who get around — and a lot more — on skateboards. This is the fourth-annual incarnation of the poster and photography exhibition, and its third time in Minneapolis. The event originated at the defunct Tarnish & Gold gallery in Northeast in 2010, was put on the next year in the XY&Z gallery, which also closed, and had a stint last year in the Ace Hotel in New York. Minneapolis-born skaters Mike Burrill and John Dewey created the show to "celebrate the creativity of the skate community," and to get as much of it in one place for a party as possible. This year's evening features Fletcher Barnhill of Baby Skateboards, whose custom boards are reminiscent of outsider art and Daniel Johnston album covers; typographic artist Joe Garvey; David Dresbach; and many more from both Minneapolis and New York City. All the posters will be on sale at this one-night-only show. (Art by David Dresbach)
