Short-Short Salon

Who likes short-shorts? The Loft Literary Center sure does. This Wednesday, the organization is hosting its first flash-fiction marathon, dubbed Short-Short Salon. Host Marge Barrett, who teaches flash fiction at the center, will bring the hippest literary craze to center stage with a reading and open mic. Earlier this month, local writers submitted pieces to the Short-Shorts contest, hosted by MinnPost in previous years, in hopes of their work being selected as the winning story featured at the event. Lucas Schultz, events coordinator at the Loft, reports that they received nearly 200 submissions this year. Impressive, considering last year's count was 41. In addition to a reading from this year's winner, 12 authors from previous contests will also take the stage, with each piece getting progressively shorter as the evening goes on. Why? When Barrett started her contest, there was a word limit of 800, and the word count has been going down incrementally every year since. Local comedian Rana May will emcee the evening with her usual flair for literary hilarity. Be sure to bring ideas as well; audience members will be invited to pen their own piece of flash fiction to share.
