“I didn’t know comedy was something you could do,” says comedian Shapel Lacey, who makes his first trip ever to Minneapolis this week to headline at House of Comedy. “Growing up, I knew what standup was from watching Eddie Murphy’s Raw and Dave Chapelle’s Killing Me Softly, but I never thought I could do this.” It was a group of friends that dared him to try it, thinking his funny personality would make him a natural. They were right. “I’m pretty much the same guy on stage,” he says. “Off stage, I’m maybe a little more introverted.” His set his based mostly on his life, including his past issues with anger management, though you wouldn’t know it by his affable manner. “No, that’s a real thing,” he laughs. Fortunately, he’s been able to successfully direct that energy into his comedy. He also channels it into skateboarding and music. “I’m a huge Oasis fan,” he states. “But a lot of what I listen to is ‘80s hardcore punk, like Black Flag and Minor Threat. I’m a big geek for that. That’s in my blood right there.”
