While Lowertown St. Paul came alive a few weeks ago with pop-up installations and activities at Northern Spark, this weekend is Minneapolis's chance to shine with Secret City, a big celebration featuring interactive art in unexpected places. Over by the Walker Art Center/Basilica of St. Mary, there will be mini-golf, Aztec dance performances, church tours, and a special performance under the I-94 underpass from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Along Hennepin Avenue, from Fifth to Ninth Streets, festivalgoers can check out Minnesota Fringe Festival sneak peeks, performances from Brave New Workshop, art billboards and displays, and City Pages' 10,000 Sounds Festival from 6 to 10 p.m. At the Minneapolis Convention Center, folks will find ping-pong tables, a bicycle ballet performance, live music, and art-making activities from 6 to 10:30 p.m. This location is also where you can find the intriguing MIMMI (Minneapolis Interactive Macro-Mood Installation), a large, cloud-like sculpture that hovers over the plaza, reacting to the energy of the crowd with shifts in color and shape (pictured above). Call up to the installation and see what it does, or watch as it morphs throughout the evening in reaction to changes in weather, traffic, noise, and other things. The Greenway Glow, which features illuminated installations plus free art happenings at nearby locations, is also part of the event. For more info, visit www.minneapolis.org/secretcity.
