Sean Patton

You could say that Sean Patton is a self-made comedian. When he started doing standup in his hometown of New Orleans, he quickly discovered that few venues hosted comedy. There were, however, plenty of music venues which weren't booked every night. "They needed something to fill the time, so we started doing open mics in coffee shops and bars. Then some of the guys started putting on shows," he says. That had its limitations, though. "We realized New Orleans is an amazing city, but comedy is kind of low on the totem pole." So Patton headed to New York City. "I love New York, because it's not very nice," he says. "Everyone moves there for some kind of dream, some kind of future, but the city really squeezes the posers out." Patton worked what he describes as a crappy day job, and ate pizza and hot dogs his first year there, but he was able to perform nearly every night. He had no back-up plan. "I've been doing comedy for 11 years," he says. "Everyone I know who started at the same time that had a back-up path is now on that path. And there's nothing wrong with that. The things I've put myself through for comedy — it's hard." 18+.
