Phenomenal performer, playwright, spoken-word artist, and all-around brilliant human Shá Cage concludes her epic trilogy exploring identity with #sayhername, a show featuring theater, puppetry, music, and storytelling. Evoking the hashtag that erupted on social media after the death of Sandra Bland, an African American woman who died of suicide in the aftermath of a traffic stop and subsequent jailing, Cage’s piece tells the story of a girl named wo•myn who demands that anybody say her name. Despite the horrific events that led to Bland’s death, this ritualistic piece creates a utopian new world, filled with sensory phenomena to the experience. The performance coincides with the opening reception for the exhibition “Dimensions of Indigenous & Cultural Identity,” also at Intermedia.
