With the looming danger of potentially offensive material being recorded and distributed online, some standup comedians have grown wary of delving into such sensitive subjects as race, religion, and sex. Rather than walking on politically correct eggshells, however, Sarah Silverman gleefully trounces such topics, delivering daringly profane punchlines with a feigned innocence that is continually undone by a smart-ass grin. This unique talent to elicit helpless laughter from supposedly taboo subjects is the greatest testament to Silverman's satiric fearlessness. While Silverman has been building a reputation in the comedy world for years, amassing her fan base through live performances, as well as through the patently irreverent concert/sketch film Jesus Is Magic and a scene-stealing part in the documentary The Aristocrats, it was the Sarah Silverman Program, which aired on Comedy Central from 2007-10, that brought her widespread attention. Even folks who didn't know the comedian from those works couldn't avoid the ubiquity of her irresistibly raunchy breakup song, "I'm Fucking Matt Damon." Silverman's profile is larger than ever these days with supporting turns in a slew of movies, including her voicing of one of the central characters in the family-friendly animated film Wreck-It Ralph. Longtime fans need not worry over the comedian's popularity; as this appearance at Mystic Lake will attest, Silverman remains an equal-opportunity offender, uniting audiences with a provocative wit and an undaunted sense of humor.
