Being a comedian is hard work. “I’m waking up from my second nap of the day, so it’s a rough life,” says Ryan Dalton from his apartment in Cleveland. “I’m trying to live longer, and I think napping is the way to go.” Though he was a class cut-up, Dalton didn’t try doing standup until after attending college at Kent State University. That school also happened to be in his hometown. “I studied marketing, joined a fraternity, and experienced all the things I never experienced in high school,” he explains about his sheltered upbringing. “I was raised like a veal. My mom put it into my head that as soon as you walk out the door, death is waiting for you. ‘Don’t you watch the news, it’s all death, and murder, and rape. Why would you leave the street you grew up on?’” After college, Dalton went to New York and started hanging out with one of his frat brothers who had just started doing comedy: Steve Byrne. “We were friends long before comedy,” he says. Dalton gave it a go, and was hooked immediately. His friendship with Byrne continues to this day. “He put me on two episodes of his show Sullivan and Son, and that experience was not lost on me. I kept thinking about how many people would kill for this.” With a new CD about to come out, called I’m Married Let Me Tell You About It, Dalton is now looking to take on issues he once had trepidation about tackling. “Like the birth of Christ and the Immaculate Conception,” he says. “That’s got to be the first case of Sixteen and Pregnant. Who falls for that? ‘I’m pregnant, but I didn’t have sex with anybody. It’s God’s.’ And you’re the boyfriend saying, ‘That’s cool. I’ll help raise it.’ I mean, I’m not anti-religious, but does anyone else find this strange?” With Laura Thorne.
